MULTI-SENSOR DETECTION AND TRACKING OF CONTROLLED OIL SPILLS
Airborne remote sensing of controlled oil spills was carried out off the coast of California. These tests supplement the oil spill tests conducted off the Alabama coast. The oils spilled were no. 2 fuel, no. 6 fuel, light crude and heavy crudes. Data was taken with two microwave radiometers at 10.2 GHz and 30 GHz, an infrared scanner at 8-14 micron, and a four lens camera using filters in the visable and near UV region. On the bases of this experiment and the previous experiments an all-weather system is recommended that uses an IR scanner as the clear weather detection device with a dual TV camera system at 0.36-0.4 micron and 0.6-0.7 microns. The all weather sensor recommended is a 35 GHz scanning microwave radiometers. (Author)
