AN EXAMINATION OF THE AUTOMATED DESIGN OF PRESTRESSED CONCRETE BRIDGE DECKS BY COMPUTER
The extent to which computers can be applied to the automated design of concrete structures is examined using prestressed concrete box girder bridges as examples. A sequential unconstrained minimization technique with an interior penalty function is combined with intermittent elastic structural analyses to search for minimum cost. The design procedure is in general conformity with the British unified concrete code cp 110 and the draft bridge code b/116. Forty-six computed designs are compared with 173 bridges built since 1956, and it is concluded that optimizing programs should be included as design aids in the next stage of the application of computers in civil engineering.
