ANIMALS ON AND ALONG THE ROAD

DIEREN OP EN LANGS DE WEG

This pocket guide presents a survey of the most common animals found on and near roads in the Netherlands. It is an aid for the identification of dead as well as live animals. The animals that are discussed are divided into four groups of vertebrates: (1) mammals; (2) birds; (3) reptiles; and (4) amphibians. A picture of each animal is presented as well as a map showing its area of distribution. Besides that, the following features are discussed for each animal: (a) season; (b) habitat; (c) characteristics; (d) behaviour along the road; (e) special details; and (f) risk of collision. A list of endangered and protected species is included. The relationship between roads and animals is discussed, focussing on the function and the management of road verges. A method for the registration of animal road casualties is outlined.
