NATURE ACROSS MOTORWAYS

NATUUR OVER WEGEN

This book was written at the request of the Road and Hydraulic Engineering Division (DWW) of the Dutch Department for Public Works and Water Management (Rijkswaterstaat). It discusses the negative impacts of motorways in the Netherlands on nature and the measures that are taken to reduce these negative impacts. Rijkswaterstaat distinguishes four types of impacts: (1) habitat destruction; (2) disturbance to habitats; (3) roads as barriers; and (4) wounding and killing of animals by road traffic. The series of coordinated means used to counter these impacts is: (a) avoidance; (b) mitigation; (c) compensation; and (d) optimization. With respect to these measures the knowledge and experience gained by Rijkswaterstaat in recent years is presented on three subdomains: (1) fragmentation and consolidation; (2) management of motorway verges; and (3) compensation for ecological features. Each chapter is accompanied by descriptions of some relevant projects that have been implemented in these fields.
