RESEARCH REQUIRED IN THE FIELD OF AGGREGATES

FORSKNINGSBEHOV INOM BALLASTOMRAADET

Within the Swedish mine-owners' association a committee is working on test methods for aggregate materials. The composition of the committee is such that it should be able to tackle problems from a variety of viewpoints and estimate the value of the results for different fields of application. The overall activity programme of this committee is presented along with a description of eight projects within this field considered as being the most urgent ones. The projects are as follows: 1. Correlation between practical results from wear tests on paving materials and properties of aggregates received from testing; 2. Influence of the surface structure of aggregate materials and their reactivity properties on the bond to cement paste or asphalt; 3. Aggregates used in concrete containing only crushed materials; 4. Requirements for aggregates used in high-strength concrete; 5. Preparation of quality criteria for aggregates used in concrete; 6. Methods for the evaluation of sand or gravel deposits; 7. Testing methods and standards for determining the mineralogical composition of aggregates for base courses; 8. Wear on asphalt pavements caused by studded tyres. An order of priority is indicated and a comparison is made with a list of projects made by a Swedish concrete research organisation. /TRRL/
