CONCRETE FLOOR SLAB DAMAGED BY SWELLING FILL, AN UNUSUAL CASE STUDY
ETT OVANLIGT SKADEFALL - BETONGGOLV PAA SVAELLANDE FYLLNADSMASSOR
The actual floor slab is 15-17 cm thick, covering a 10 cm layer of gravel and 40-50 cm of slag on the bedrock. Six months after construction some parts of the floor had risen up to 36 mm and extensive cracking was visible. An investigation was made to determine the reasons for this phenomenon. From the beginning it was obvious that those parts of the building having a fairly high floor temperature also showed the biggest heaves. Samples were taken of the slag filling and a chemical analysis indicated a reactive basic slag with a high ratio of ca0 contra SI02, probably obtained from the so called kaldo process. By mistake this type of slag had been used instead of the blast furnace slag stipulated. A swelling test showed that kaldo slag expands substantially while blast furnace slag is almost resistent to swelling. Temperature and moisture content had much influence on the rate of expansion. X-ray diffraction measuring was performed to determine changes in the chemical composition of the slag before and after swelling. Three theories about the actual process of swelling are presented. /TRRL/
