THE BITUMEN ABSORPTION CAPACITY OF MINERAL FILLER
HET OPNEEMUERMOGEN VAN VULSTOF
This article is meant to demonstrate that there exists A relationship between the porosity and the bitumen absorption capacity of mineral fillers, provided that the density (determined by the mineralogical compostion) and a factor R, i.e, the ratio between the concentration by volume of solid in compacted filler and of water in filler paste prepared according to the test for bitumen absorption capacity, is taken into account. As this is not the case in the rijkswaterstaat specifications fillers of good quality may be condemned. This is chiefly due to the test for bitumen absorption capacity since the results obtained from this test are strongly dependent on the density and mineralogical composition of the filler. It is therefore advisable to test fillers of a new or unknown type more extensively than is prescribed in the specifications. According to a statistical analysis of test results the factor r of suitable fillers lies between 1.16 and 1.35. /TRRL/
