FUTURE DIRECTIONS AND NEED FOR INNOVATION IN ASPHALT PAVEMENT MANAGEMENT FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA
This paper addresses the role of research and innovation in pavement management from a long, intermediate and short term perspective. It then reviews the current situation in Southern Africa with regard to the status of pavement management technology and some of the major problems relating to resources and road condition. Research directions are next explored within the context of the major issues in Southern Africa and the basic effort needed to properly implement pavement management and pavement research. The general needs and benefits of a coordinated research plan are identified, examples of two studies of research needs and priorities are described, and the future of pavement management is briefly explored. Finally, the implications in terms of "deliverables" or meeting the challenges for Southern Africa are discussed. (A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 873950.
