EFFECT OF MOISTURE CONTENT OF CONCRETE ON ADHESION OF EPOXY COATINGS

Test results regarding adhesion between epoxy coatings and concrete surfaces are presented. The moisture content of the surface layer of the concrete was used as a variable. It was found from the tests that an epoxy coating of the emulsion type adhered to the concrete which was dry on the surface only as firmly as to the concrete which had dried to some depth. The drying time varied from four hours to one week. The drying conditions did not produce any notable effect on the adhesion of the coating. In principle, an appropriate criterion of the moisture content in such cases is that the concrete surface has a dry appearance. In several cases the adhesion of the epoxy coatings was found to be higher than the tensile strength of the concrete. The conclusions drawn from this investigation should be considered to be applicable solely to epoxy coating of the type used in the test (solvent type and emulsion type). /TRRL/
