CEMENTSTBILISERING
Swedish experiences with cement stabilization for road and airfield construction as well as gravel road reconstruction are presented in this article. During the 1950s the method was mostly used for airfield projects where the roadbase was stabilized. Good bearing capacity and durability combined with low construction costs were the advantages. After some years, however, lateral cracks started developing in the bituminous pavements caused by shrinkage in the roadbase. Since then and with more success cement stabilization has been used in gravel road reconstruction. Investigations have been made on how to avoid cracks. Obviously the climate has some importance. In southern Sweden cracks are less numerous and smaller than in northern Sweden. In situ mixing gives a better result than premixed soil/cement. Increased pavement thickness reduces the cracks as does a thin layer of unbound gravel between the stabilized subgrade and the pavement. Water saturation percentage should be kept below 80%. /TRRL/
