EQUIPMENT FOR WINTER ROAD MAINTENANCE

An account is given of machinery available, specific requirements and future needs. For snow clearance, there is a trend towards the use of motor graders instead of lorries. This is due to improved capacity which if it could be combined with increased speed would make graders even more suitable. Rotary snow ploughs are used in mountainous areas but their capacity is fairly low and their energy consumption high. Sand and salt spreading equipment are either mounted on a lorry or a separate trailer. Both types are giving trouble, mainly an unequal distribution of material over the road surface at low salt contents such as 5-10 grams per cubic metre. Studded tires in combination with de-icing salt produce a slush which has to be cleared away from the road surface. Many alternatives have been tested but none has given a completely satisfactory result. A plough with 11 spring loaded separate rubber edges has so far been the best alternative. Ice scraping equipment is also causing much trouble. Tests with hard metal cutting edges are carried out in an attempt at finding a way of reducing wearing costs. /TRRL/
