ROCK BLASTING IN VIEW OF MATERIAL QUALITY AND THE NEED FOR STRENGTHENING MEASURES
BERGSPRAENGNING MED HAENSYN TILL BERGKVALITET OCH FOERSTAERKNINGSBEHOV
Careful rock blasting technique - according to the pre-split method or smooth surface blasting - is described, indicating many advantages over conventional rock blasting. Theories on the effects of various explosives and charges, hole diameters and spacings on the surrounding rock masses are presented. Formulae for calculation of total cost for smooth surface blasting are given and for a given example the difference compared to conventional rock blasting is 10 skr/m2 regardless of hole diameter. Pre-splitting is more expensive by 5 skr/m2. This increase is more than justified considering that no rock bolts or concrete linings are necessary. Even the easiest measures to strengthen the rock surface would mean more than twice the excess cost for smooth surface blasting. The poorer the quality of rock, the greater the difference will be. /TRRL/
