EARTH DEFORMATIONS

An account of settlements and horizontal movements of earth is presented. It indicates effects of loads on different soils and laboratory methods to investigate these effects and predict them. For non-cohesive soil the problem is not so much to achieve satisfactory compaction as to avoid harmful settlements of adjacent buildings while driving piles or blasting rock. These operations can cause compaction in fairly deeply situated layers of soil. For cohesive soil three parameters are of importance for settlements: void volume, load magnitude and thickness of the compressible soil layers. With compressibility tests it is possible to determine: consolidation ratio, susceptibility to settlement and settlement rate. Horizontal deformations are mostly due to differences in soil levels, pile driving or excavating operations. /TRRL/
