COMPACTION AND THAWING OF FROZEN SOIL USING QUICKLIME

Frozen soil can be thawed by adding quicklime. A reaction between the lime and the void water results in heat emission. Laboratory tests have been made at KTH, the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, to define the amount of lime necessary to raise the soil temperature to -0 degrees C or higher. A water content of 12% or more proved to be enough to maintain the heating process, but 5% was not sufficient. The lime had to be finely ground and above + 10 degrees C before mixing. Compression tests on thawed soil at different levels from the surface were also performed. As the actual thawing process demands much more lime than does the raising of the temperature to - 0 degrees C, compaction tests on frozen soil of various types, water content and temperatures were made. Satisfactory results were obtained when the soil masses contained less than 5% water and had a temperature above - 5 degrees C. A cost comparison is made between using quicklime, sodium chloride, calcium chloride, magnesium chloride or electricity to thaw the soil. /TRRL/
