DUST ABATEMENT, A CONSIDERABLE COST FACTOR OF ROAD MAINTENANCE
DAMMBINDNING - EN BETYDANDE KOSTNADSPOST I VAEGHAALLNINGEN
Despite a decreasing trend in the use of dust abatement agents, they still constitute a considerable part of the total costs of road maintenance in Sweden. Agents and methods are described with special reference to the use of oil for this purpose. The historic background is discussed and the present situation reviewed. Magnesium chloride is considered inferior to calcium chloride for dust abatement purposes and is therefore not used by the National Swedish Road Administration. Both have the disadvantage of causing corrosion on cars. Field tests with oil as dust abatement agent were started in the end of the 1960s. The practical results show that the method can compete technically very well with traditional ones but economically is not justified with present oil prices. /TRRL/
