CALCULATING A CLOSING SPEED OF TWO VEHICLES APPROACHING AT A RIGHT ANGLE
Many times during a right angle collision, the investigator is able to determine the impact speeds of the vehicles through the use of Conservation of Linear Momentum. From the impact, the investigator can work backwards to determine the respective speeds of the vehicles as they approach the POI. Many times the question will be asked, what is the closing speed of the vehicles at a particular distance as they approach the impact? The following computer program written in GW Basic addresses this question and may save the investigator some tedious calculator work.
