PREPARING FOR ROUGH WATERS
The Texas portion of the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway (GIWW) is the transportation route for about 66 tons of cargo per year. With erosion threatening to close the GIWW, the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration initiated an impact study. Information was gathered and divided into four categories: 1) origin-destination data, 2) shipment-distance data, 3) roadway network data, and 4) roadway degradation. Researchers concluded that a closure would be most significant in terms of fuel cost, emissions, and roadway service life.
