SUPERPAVE OFFERS CONTRACTORS LONGER LASTING PAVEMENTS, MORE RESPONSIBILITY
The Strategic Highway Research Program developed a mix design procedure to produce asphalt mixes that better resist rutting, low temperature cracking, and fatigue cracking. Following development, the new Superpave Method was compared to the conventional Marshall Mix Design Method for purposes of noting how the two asphalt concretes differ. This article describes the study protocol and the findings of the comparison. Benefits of the Superpave design include decreased rutting, increased film thickness, no increase in segregation, and use of a gyratory compactor as a quality control tool. Testing proved that Superpave mixes do better resist aging, stripping, and cracking in the field, increasing their overall durability. Several concerns--breakdown due to mechanical mixing, restrictive volumetric requirements, draindown of the binder, and increased field densities--were noted and will require further investigation.
