TRAFFIC AND THE ENVIRONMENT
TRAFFICO E AMBICNTE
This article looks critically at the case against the private car and reviews current legislation and engine technology designed to limit and reduce pollution from exhaust gases. The compulsory limitation of cars in cities is regarded as necessary to the success of these measures. Further measures suggested are: restrictive updating of limits now in force; legislative standards prescribing the optimum maintenance of engines (especially carburation, ignition and exhaust systems) and prohibiting any damage or alteration to engine or associated systems to improve speed or power; and incentives to the large petrol companies to intensify research into refining technology. /TRRL/
