QUIET BUS
The cost of reducing noise emission from 89 to 86dba for a 1975 double deck bus is claimed to be at least &1000; the cost must be borne by the fare paving passengers who gain least benefit from the noise reduction. The modification consists of the encapsulation of the power pack, mounting the radiator outside the capsule to achieve adequate cooling. Quiet packs for single deck buses are more difficult to design because of the limited space between the top and the floor underside. There is evidence to show that near mounted longintal engines work in stagnant air conditions making ventilation of the quiet pack essential, an added complication since space in the engine compartment is already limited. The author suggests that should legislation require further reduction in noise levels the cost of introducing quiet packs should be shown separately in price schedules to demonstrate the impact of noise reduction on investment and operating costs. More parts will be involved and it is to be hoped that adequate servicing ability will accompany their introduction. /TRRL/
