HOW TO DEFINE REGIONAL RAIL TRANSPORT?
Regional transportation is tricky to define as it has to be distinguished from suburban services on the one hand and from long-distance services on the other. Various interpretations are possible in this respect. The boundaries are flexible and depend upon differing prerequisites in the individual countries. The known criteria listed in the article can therefore only provide starting points for any definition, which must take its lead in each country from the conditions found nationally and regionally. Regional transportation services usually end up intermingled with urban traffic. Often 50% and more of road users in urban zones are from the region. This means there is a close correlation between traffic problems in built-up areas and those in the region. This article deals with the concepts for regional transportation, the problems specific to regional transportation and new measures taken.
