COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS MIXES BY ULTRASONIC TESTS
Non-destructive testing using ultrasonic pulse techniques make it possible to study the influence of many factors on specimens of bituminous mix without altering the respective properties of the materials in the mix. In this study a test technique is described using a sonoray ultrasonic tester on compacted specimens 7.1 cm in diameter by 7.1 cm in height, the specimens being placed between identical source and receiver transducers in vertical alignment. The specimens were prepared with varying aggregate and bitumen composition, the binder used being 40/60 burmah shell. Results were obtained from five specimens of each type of mix used. These results are presented and discussed, and recommendations for further research are given. /TRRL/
