THE REPAIR AND RENOVATION OF ALUM CHINE SUSPENSION BRIDGE, BOURNEMOUTH
The maintenance operation of Alum Chine Footbridge, built in 1903-4, are briefly outlined, and details are given of an inspection of the bridge undertaken in 1972, which revealed that all four ropes were severely corroded and needed replacement. Various methods of replacing the original ropes whilst supporting the bridge deck are summarised. The method chosen was to support the deck structure on two support towers thus releasing all tension from the ropes. Calculations of loadings, maximum rope tension in the main span, maximum tension in the backstays, and factors of safety are presented, together with the full specification for the repair of the bridge. The work on site, which began in Sept 1973 and was completed in December 1973, is briefly described. /TRRL/
