POLLUTION-THE LEGISLATIVE BALANCE
The important aspects of pollution by diesel engines are smoke and noise. The legislation brought into force by the United Kingdom in 1971 is likely to be more stringent by 1977. Engine manufacturers have a difficult task in meeting performance standards; as a result environmentally "clean" engines have suffered reduced availability at higher costs. Regulations are not uniform throughout the world and at present are sometimes difficult to interpret; often no allowance is made for engine deterioration during wear. It is thought that future regulations will introduce the need for production uniformity already employed by perkins on six and eight cylinder engines. Their research is also directed at reducing base engine sound levels and the recently announced Perkins "squish lip" combustion system designed to meet future emission regulations also reduces noise by 3dba. They have a development target of reducing engine noise by up to 10dba by the early 1980's using a process of damping, decoupling, insulation and detuning. There is also a great need to reduce noise levels inside driver's cabs to ease the task of controlling todays high cost and potentially dangerous goods vehicles. /TRRL/
