SHAKE DOWN DESIGN
TILLVAEXTFLYTNING - SHAKE DOWN
In 1973 new regulations for calculations of steel structures according to the ultimate load method were introduced in Sweden. They encountered heavy criticism on the point of the prescribed methods for calculating the gradual growth of deformation due to rotation in plastic hinges. The bearing capacity was supposed to be endangered. This article describes results from a series of tests made to establish the relationship between estimated and measured bearing capacities. Not considering the effect of strain hardening, the ratio between measured and calculated stabilizing load proved to range between 1.08 and 1.25. Measured stabilizing load versus ultimate load have an average ratio of 1.02. The investigation shows that shake down is not a problem of bearing capacity but of deformation. /TRRL/
