WHAT COST LIGHTING?

Local authorities are now investigating means of saving energy by replacing inefficient street lighting sources by low pressure sodium systems except where good colour is essential. The article describes a study conducted jointly by the Association of Public Lighting Engineers (APLE) and the Lighting Industry Federation involving nearly a quarter of all lighting authorities in Britain. The majority of those interviewed agreed that road lighting reduced accidents by between 30-50 per cent and it was not economical to reduce the effectiveness of street lighting. Of those interviewed 92 per cent thought that half night lighting was wrong because of accident and crime dangers after midnight. Most councils accept that considerable fuel savings can be made in energy consumption and maintenance, without reducing light output, by conversion of tungsten to low pressure sodium lamps; the capital costs involved are large, and the APLE have pressed for government aid to help with the installations. The article also contains details of conversion schemes currently being undertaken by Hertfordshire, Kent, Manchester, Hounslow and Bexley. /TRRL/
