EFFECTIVENESS OF FLEXURAL STRENGTHENING OF RC MEMBERS

A common technique for enhancing or reinstating the flexural capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) members involves the casting of new plain or reinforced concrete either on the compressive or tensile side of the member. In this paper, the flexural characteristics of the resulting 'composite' elements are investigated through a parametric study. The quantities examined include the capacity and curvature at yield and ultimate limit states as well as the ductility achieved in comparison with monolithic (i.e. no slip) behaviour. An interface model was implemented on a computer program of RC section analysis. The shear-slip relationship obtained from pure shear test data was approximated by a bilinear curve. Additionally, the relevant CEB model code recommendations were taken into account and the degree of 'monolithicity', according to the remodelling correction factors, Yn, proposed by CEB Bulletin No. 162 are used. Results indicate that, in several cases, the values of Yn recommended by the above bulletin can be corrected for a more economic design. Finally, as a result of the sensitivity study, it can be concluded that in most cases the deviation from the monolithic flexural behaviour is very small. (A)
