GUIDED TRANSIT EXPRESSWAY FOR OXFORD

The Guided Transit Express (GTE) for the city of Oxford, England, is described in the context of Network 2000, a wider concept for the future integrated transport network for Oxford. The GTE is a proposed guided bus system which would, in many ways, combine bus and tram technology. It would provide fast, safe journeys on fixed tracks between the city centre and its outskirts, and its buses would then use normal roads beyond the city. Its purposes would be to: (1) transform park-and-ride, by providing very fast journeys between the two existing park-and-ride sites and the city centre, and by upgrading the park-and-ride sites to genuine interchanges with a range of quality facilities and services; (2) provide GTE services to the neighbouring towns of Abingdon, Bicester and Witney; and (3) serve each of the two main heavy bus corridors on the east side of Oxford. It is anticipated that the GTE will use European-style multi-door articulated vehicles with easy access, off-bus ticketing, and low pollution (possibly zero pollution in the city centre). Network 2000 would comprise: (1) the GTE; (2) upgraded park-and-ride services and sites; (3) improved local bus services; and (4) an integrated ticket system.
