MODELS FOR COMPARISONS OF ROAD ACCIDENT RATES IN PORTUGAL AND THE U.K., AT THE LOCAL LEVEL
The main objectives of this paper are to describe the development and application of suitable statistical models for comparing road accident rates, at regional or sub-regional levels, between the United Kingdom and Portugal. The project involved the construction of statistical models for the number of accidents of different levels of severity on different road classes, incorporating explanatory variables such as traffic levels, features of the road network, and population characteristics. The results of this project could help decisions that have to be taken on safety measures for reducing the high accident rates in Portugal and bringing them to "acceptable" levels in international terms. Furthermore these results are expected to set important indications for the development of similar projects between other countries (A). For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 874003.
