VERTEBRAL COLUMN INJURIES AN SEAT BELTS
Vertebral column injuries in the low thoracic or the lumbar area have been causally associated with the use of the seat belt. The relationship between seat belt wearing and the existence of a lumbar spine fracture must be viewed and interpreted with caution. Some of the lumbar fractures, especially those of the compression or flexion type, are similar if not identical in crash victims with the without seat belts. There is a specific seat-belt injury pattern in which the seat belt is probably causal: minimal vertebral body compression; longitudinal separation of its neural arch; a seat belt contusion; minimal lateral or anterior-posterior displacement; minimal torsional displacement. This article presents seven car crashes within 11 occupants received vertebral column fractures. /MW/
