DRIVING SIMULATION STUDIES OF RAISED PAVEMENT MARKERS FOR ROADWAY DELINEATION

Raised pavement markers are applied to pavements to guide, warn and regulate traffic. They may supplement traffic signs and signals, or provide their own information. The basic requirement for a pavement marking is that drivers can interpret its meaning in sufficient time to properly react to its message. A study exploring the use and benefits of retro-reflective raised pavement markers (RRPMs) to supplement line markings for increased visibility of the roadway is currently underway at the University of Iowa. A brief summary of the research factors and their treatments for this study are presented here. The study will be performed in a high fidelity simulation environment and will test the relative effectiveness of a variety of different RRPMs applications.
