INCENTIVES AND RATE OF RETURN FOR TRAVEL SURVEYS
An understanding of travel behavior in a given study area is integral to transportation planning. Typically, a site-based or household-based travel survey is utilized to develop this understanding. This paper, which appears in a compendium of conference papers, addresses household-based travel surveys. Lower rates of return in recent years have been observed, making it difficult to collect enough data for effective planning. Various incentive methods have been employed to induce survey recipients to participate fully. Some methods are described and their apparent effect on rates of return discussed. Monetary incentives sent with survey materials appear to be most effective in increasing return rates; nonmonetary incentives are less effective.
