AN ANALYSIS OF NON-MOTORIZED ACCESS TO THE SEATTLE FERRY TERMINAL USING ORIGIN DESTINATION DATA

This summary describes research into non-motorized access to the Colman Dock (Seattle Ferry Terminal) from within Seattle's central business district (CBD). Findings from this study document where existing demand for pedestrian travel occurs and can be used to determine how to better serve existing pedestrians using Colman Dock. The Washington State Ferry System conducted an on-board origin-destination survey of ferry users and then geocoded the data to the transportation analysis zone from which they originated within the CBD. Mode of travel was identified as well. Findings suggest that there is a critical need for better data to study non-motorized travel. The author speculates from findings that more pedestrian and bike travel to the dock would be generated from improvements in the access to the dock by non-motorized modes. This summary appears in a compendium of conference papers.
