PERFORMANCE OF UNIFORMLY GRADED AGGREGATES IN BITUMINOUS CONCRETE

This paper reports a comparative study of the stability of uniformly graded (UG) and well graded (WG) aggregate mixes for bituminous concrete, and attempts to determine an equivalent pavement thickness for UG mixtures. The materials selected for the study were: (1) four types of UG; (2) one type of WG conforming to Indian Roads Congress (IRC) specifications; (3) well-graded sand; (4) fly ash as mineral filler; and (5) bitumen (80/100). The 'minimum voids' concept was used to proportion the mix. For each aggregate type, three samples were tested for an assumed bitumen content. The five mixtures could be classified into two groups: (1) having higher stability at higher bitumen content; and (2) lower stability at lower bitumen content. It was found that the performance of UG aggregates decreases appreciably with grain size. The equivalent thickness of a UG aggregate can be obtained from its grade, using a table. The use of UG aggregate for bituminous concrete, as illustrated here, ensures good quality control, because it involves only one type of aggregate.
