COMMUNICATION THE KEY IN CAD
This article describes some recent advances in computer-aided design (CAD) technology and systems, which now have key importance for transport authorities, contractors, and civil engineers. CAD is being used increasingly for road design, construction, maintenance, reconstruction, and resurfacing. The increasing use of computer networks and electronic mail, and greater compatibility between different computer and CAD systems, are allowing CAD users to communicate ideas and information between each other much more easily than before. MOSS is now the most widely used 3D highway design system in the world; it is a tool kit that can be used throughout all stages of the project cycle, and, with its enhancements, for a wide range of applications. Intergraph's InRoads is a civil engineering package, and its InRail assists railway track design and maintenance. CARD/I has modules for survey, water, road, and rail, and helps engineers to design junctions, calculate transition curves, and create cross sections. CLM's CEAL integrates many civil engineering programs with a common database; it is used for survey data processing, design modelling, production of construction drawings, calculation of quantities, and design checking.
