WV DOT STUDIES OVERCOATING
The West Virginia Department of Transportation recently completed a study and released a final report titled "Maintenance Primers Over Rusted Surfaces." The aim of the study was to identify primers and coatings that could be used to reduce the amount of abrasive blasting needed for surface preparation. The primers would also lessen environmental concerns and reduce containment, sampling, testing, and disposal costs. Acrylics, alkyd primers, aluminum-pigmented epoxy mastics, calcium sulfonate alkyds, epoxies, epoxy mastics, metal pretreatment coatings, rust converters, rust penetrating sealers, urethanes, water-borne organic zinc primers, and water-borne inorganic zinc primers were evaluated. Investigators found that epoxy coatings were superior to other generic coatings, and epoxy mastics performed better when aluminum pigments were added. Organic zinc performed well also.
