TRADE-OFFS IN PROGRESSIVE SIGNAL SYSTEMS
Smooth, continuous platoon progression occurs when the timing of coordinated signal systems is optimized. Platoon progression is considered a cost-effective traffic management strategy based on the reductions in stops, delays, fuel consumption, and exhaust emissions. This article attempts to answer a question that is periodically posed, "Can progression accommodate more vehicles than interrupted flow, and thereby stave off the onset of congestion?". While the answers have been conflicting, it is known that intersection spacing, turning movements, and platoon dispersion can be detrimental to progression. Studies to assess signal timing strategies should consider whether or not those reductions in stops and delays to one set of road users are not outweighed by adverse effects throughout the traffic network.
