SAN JOSE LEADS THE WAY ON SMART CORRIDOR PROJECT
In 1990, JHK & Associates completed a Statewide Smart Corridor Study. The study included a comprehensive review of over 1,000 miles of freeways in heavily traveled corridors in California. The four urbanized areas studied included Sacramento area, Los Angeles region, San Francisco Bay Area and San Diego. The study examined freeway segments where congestion exists and reviewed opportunities for balancing traffic across the roadway network using the technologies and procedures developed in the Santa Monica Freeway Demonstration Project in Los Angeles. One of the corridors identified as benefiting from the application of Smart Corridor technologies was the State Highway 17/I-880 Corridor in Santa Clara County. It stretches 15 miles from the Town of Los Gatos to Milpitas, with the majority of the mileage occurring in the City of San Jose.
