WIRELESS COMMUNICATION FOR TRAFFIC SIGNALS

In the late 1980s, local traffic engineers in the Denver region were polled concerning coordination of the traffic signals. The biggest concern they expressed was their inability to coordinate traffic signals across jurisdictional boundaries. At their request the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG), the designated Metropolitan Planning Organization for the Denver region, initiated a Traffic Operations Program. The program was charged with improving signal coordination on arterial corridors in the region with a special emphasis on coordination across jurisdictional boundaries. It became evident that signal coordination could not be maintained along these corridors without a communication link to each traffic signal therein.
