RESOLUTION EFFECTS ON VEHICLE COUNTS AND CLASSIFICATION WITH SIMULATED SATELLITE IMAGERY
The authors scanned and processed aerial photographs to simulate the performance of 1.0 m, 2.1 m, and 4.2 m resolutions of panchromatic images for counting and classifying large trucks and smaller vehicles on highway segments. Using slightly modified remote sensing measures, the researchers have seen that the 1.0 m resolution performed markedly better than the coarser resolutions for correctly identifying vehicles, in general, and for classifying smaller vehicles. In addition to these tasks, the 1.0 m resolution performed better than a desirable 90 percent accuracy rate, whereas the coarser resolutions did not. The results show that the coarser resolutions may be sufficient for classifying large trucks. Implications of the findings are discussed.
