DETERMINATION OF THE MODULUS OF DEFORMATION OF A TILL USING A PRESSUREMETER
A pressuremeter has been developed which enables soil testing to be made under constant rate of expansion conditions with little delay between boring and testing and without requiring the formation of a special borehole. The pressuremeter is used to examine stiff stoney glacial material in a part of the device and the pressure is read on a digital voltmeter at the ground surface control unit. Power supply is from batteries and air supply from a compressed air storage bottle. With no water in the system, operation in freezing conditions is practicable, and no system lags or minor leaks affect the oberved value of pressure. The probe, which is lowered down the borehole, consists basically of a central expansion monitoring device mounted in a skeleton over which the membrane is fitted. The expansion at the mid-height of the probe is monitored along six or more radii in one plan. The pressuremeter can give closely spaced in situ determinations of the pressure- expansion relationships which may be interpreted in terms of modulus of deformation under constant rate of deformation conditions. A number of interpretations of this relationship are reviewed. These lead to deduced values of modulus of deformation of the tills which are compared with good quality laboratory triaxial tests and in situ plate bearing test values for the same site conditions.
