THE KENT APPROACHES TO THE DARTFORD CROSSING

This paper describes the reconstruction of bridges on the A282 Dartford Tunnel Approach Road in Kent, England, between 1988 and 1991. It outlines the criteria considered for road widening projects, and describes the different construction methods used. This dual carriageway road section is 4.5km long, and contains three interchanges. Four overbridges were replaced, and one had its deck relocated about 45m on new supports. A principal objective was to maintain existing traffic flows as much as possible, while providing access and a safe working environment for the workforce. Construction industry sources were consulted, to help produce a possible construction programme at the design stage; it is essential to formulate the practicality of the programme at that stage. The paper states five fundamental needs in designing bridges for replacement. The five overbridges were replaced by eight bridges, three of which are service/foot bridges. The techniques used were: (1) side by side replacement for two of the original bridges; (2) slide-in replacement for another two bridges; and (3) rotation to reduce skew for the remaining bridge.
