COUNTERMEASURES AGAINST FALLING ROCKS IN MOUNTAIN HIGHWAYS
This paper describes measures taken against falling rocks during the construction of the Okudoro Highway in the Yoshimo-Kumano National Park, Japan. The geological features of the area include steep slopes and alternating layers of mudstone, silicastone and sandstone. An investigation was carried out into the condition of the slopes and the probability and route of rock fall. Possible countermeasures are illustrated and costs noted. Countermeasures include a) prevention fences, b) pocket-type rock net, c) concrete prevention shed, d) shelter from falling rock, e) straightening up rock, f) foot protection, g) tying by rock bolts, h) tying by wire rope and i) contact rock nets. Prevention fences and pocket type rock nets were chosen for the project due to their low cost and ease of construction. For the covering abstract see IRRD 873033.
