SULPHUR MORTARS: A HISTORICAL SURVEY
The use of sulphur mortar is traced from its application as a replacement for poured and caulked lead in making joints in bell-and-spigot cast iron pipes (early this century), through the several modifications it has undergone over the years. The advantages of sulphur compositions over lead are listed. Sulphur motoars were marketed for the construction of brick linings inside pickling tanks motars were marketed for the construction of brick linings inside pickling tanks for steel mills in the 1920's. The formulation for the optimum combination of handling characteristics, strength, and density is given. A study to determine the most effective materials for plasticizing sulphur motars and pipe joint materials is outlined. The most successful of the additives was determined to be an olefin polysulphide (Thiokol). The federal specification embodying requirements for sulphur based jointing materials is reviewed and comments are made on limitations to the applications of sulphur motars.
