SULPHUR COMPOSITE MATERIAL
A new, high-strength construction material was developed for applications that require corrosion resistance to acid and salt solutions. The material consists of asbestos fibers and silica flour bonded together with plasticized sulphur. The specific properties of the material can be tailored to application requirements by varying proportions of the components and by choice of methods used in curing and forming the material. It has a large number of potential uses as pipe or tile in handling salt and dilute acid solutions where concrete and asbestos-cement materials now fail after relatively short exposures. Some of the applications are as pipe for containing acid mine wastes, acidic sewer products in humid soils, and corrosive liquids; as linings for vats, tanks, and ditches where control of leach and waste waters is essential; and as flooring in industrial operations where salt corrosion is a problem. /Author/
