SULPHUR-ASPHALT TRIALS IN TEXAS
Binder prepared by finely dispersing molten sulphur in hot asphalt was used in a full-scale road paving trial on a 3,000 foot section of U.S. 69 which carries over a thousand vehicles per day including heavy logging trucks. Molten sulphur and hot asphalt are blended in a high speed turbine to produce the binder. The turbine, together with metering pumps, heaters and other auxilliary equipment is mounted in a trailer specifically designed for field tests of the binder. The sulphur-asphalt binder was mixed with mineral aggregate in a standard hot mix plant. Over 2,500 tons of sulphur-asphalt hot mix were put down, containing about 100 tons of asphalt and 50 tons of sulphur. Conventional asphalt hot mix was used on control sections. Type of aggregate and amount of binder in the hot mix was varied, and the performance of the test sections will be monitoried over the next 2 years.
