PREVISION REGARDING THE TRANSPORT SYSTEM TO YEAR 2020

This report provides the background to the forecast concerning the transport system in the Helsinki metropolitan area up to the year 2020, as well as some of the results of the same forecast. A separate report goes into greater detail in specifying the model used and the environmental impact etc. This report discusses the general aspects of the model, such as the assumptions made about the development of the economic activity, travelling habits of the citizens, transport policy, and the development of the transport network. The traffic in the Helsinki metropolitan area is divided into passenger transpot and goods transport. The results indicate an overall increase of 23% in the number of trips inside the Helsinki area. The growth will be larger in the number of trips done by a personal car than by means of public transport. Compared to earlier trends, however, the growth rate in the first category decreases.
