IS THERE A NEED FOR MIX-DESIGN OF ROLLED ASPHALT?
Rolled asphalt has proved, over the years, to be one of the most reliable and durable bituminous surfacings available in the UK. The "recipe" specifications for wearing-course in BS 594 have produced very tolerant, impervious materials, but in a few situations, particularly under slow, canalised, heavy traffic, the material has not always been adequate. Improved performance of dense bituminous surfacings can be achieved by adjusting the composition to suit the materials used and a number of design procedures have been developed in the usa and elsewhere. In 1973 an optional design procedure based on the use of the Marshall test apparatus was introduced in BS 594 for the first time. It is important that any design method accurately predicts the correct composition for the conditions in which the material is to be used and the method must be repeatable and reproducible. Full-scale experiments are in progress to assess the validity of the BS 594 design procedure and the reproducibility of this and other methods is being examined. The evidence so far obtained indicates that greater reliability and improved performance should be achieved. This paper is an edited version of one presented at A symposium on "asphalt mix design: now and the future" given jointly by the institution and the society of chemical industry in London in 1974.
