INSTANT ROADS FOR DIFFICULT SITES

A temporary access road to carry heavy vehicles was constructed for a refuse tip site at Ashford, Kent consisting of precast reinforced concrete rafts 2 metres by 1 metre. The rafts were laid by three men and a lifting machine on compacted sand on the cleared and levelled site. In view of the saving of time over that required for normal road construction and the fact that the rafts can be lifted and used elsewhere when the road is no longer needed, this provides a suitable and cost-effective alternative to normal methods of road building in a wide variety of situations. The 'balcon' raft was developed by Bell and Webster Ltd, Hoddesden, Herts in collaboration with Kent county council. /TRRL/
