FIELD TESTING THE CHLORIDE CONTENT OF SEA-DREDGED AGGREGATES
The authors describe the use of the quantab test strip for determining the chloride content of water extracted from sea-dredged aggregates, and compares the results with those obtained by the volhard titration method proposed for draft British standard BS 812. The principle of the quantab titrator is conversion of a length of brown silver dichromate in a capillary tube to white silver chloride, the length of the strip converted indicating the chloride content of the solution in which it is placed, by reference to a calibration chart. Details are given of the extraction procedure and the tests carried out by the authors. If the proposed British standard 24-hour extraction procedure is followed, quantals titrators may be used to determine the salt content of sea-dredged aggregate for all but reface purposes. A 15 minute extraction suitable for site testing of aggregate has been developed; the method is described in an appendix to the paper. A single estimation by this method can be completed in 30 minutes with an accuracy better than 0.02 percent nacl. The materials for each test cost about 15P. /TRRL/
